The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) is currently recruiting permanent Electrical Maintenance Engineers to work within our prisons across Scotland. We currently have vacancies in the following locations: Edinburgh, Glasgow and Bishopbriggs however we will consider applications for other locations across Scotland. Whilst carrying out an engineering role within the SPS, you will play a key role in designing, maintaining, repairing and installing systems on the varied SPS Estate whilst enjoying the range of benefits we offer including job security, generous annual leave entitlement (34 days rising to 42 days after 5 years), a choice of two high quality pension schemes, as well as free gym access and discounts at a number of high street stores and restaurants.

You will support the Technical Manager in all aspects of Estates work, to provide a comprehensive repairs and maintenance service for electrical and electronic systems such as CCTV, locking, Building Management Systems (BMS), heating and ventilation systems

Please note that there will be a requirement to periodically work on call hours for which an allowance will be paid. Overtime may also be available based on business need, although frequency cannot be guaranteed.

Carry out reactive and planned maintenance and minor works throughout the establishment as instructed to all electrical plant, equipment and systems.
Maintain a safe and healthy working environment through regular checking and testing of electrical appliances and installations in accordance with relevant legislation. Participating in an "on call" rota for emergency repairs. Providing area coverage when required.
Monitor and adjust electrical control systems to ensure optimum performance within guidelines as well as electrical inspection and testing.
To provide technical support and advice on electrical and electronic issues to the Technical Manager and other staff as necessary.
Assume practical responsibility for all electrical installations, and provide timely pre-emptive condition reports to the Technical Manager.
Assess and order parts and equipment necessary for individual tasks, in conjunction with the administrator.
Person Specification

SPS recruitment and selection practice is based on the fundamentals of our Behavioural Competency Framework. Assessment of specific behaviours, of which there are twelve, will be determined by the role you are applying for. Whilst it is unlikely you will be assessed on all of them , you will be assessed on these identified as key to role.

Qualifications Requirements

Have completed a recognised apprenticeship in an electrical/electronic discipline.

(To include a minimum of an SVQ level 2 and a National Certificate or equivalents, such as City and Guilds)


Hold a current electrical qualification in electrical installations, for example BS 7671 or City & Guilds 2382.

Training will be provided in 18th Edition Regulations however applicants must be willing to work towards and successfully achieve.


Experience Requirements

Have experience in inspection and testing on electrical systems and installations in an industrial/commercial environment.


Be multi skilled and have experience of other Estates maintenance and repair tasks such as mechanical and building works maintenance and repairs or be willing to develop these skills.


Full driving licence that enables the person to drive in the UK, however SPS is willing to consider proposals put forward by applicants to carry out the duties by any other means.


Knowledge Skills Requirements

Sound knowledge of Health and Safety Legislation, Safe Systems of Work and contingency planning.


Ability to interpret and work from drawings, instructions and specifications.


Basic working knowledge of IT systems and packages that include Outlook and Internet Explorer.


Self motivated with the ability to make decisions and resolve problems within clearly defined parameters.
