The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) is currently recruiting permanent Plumbers to work within our prisons near you across Scotland.

The Plumber will support the Estates Management team in all aspects of Estates work to provide a comprehensive repairs and maintenance service for all mechanical systems and plant, for example plumbing, BEMS, heating and ventilation systems.

All of our Plumbers roles are based on 37 hours per week worked across Monday to Friday and we provide all tools and PPE.

There will be a requirement for you to periodically work on call hours, and you may need to travel to other establishments and areas. For this reason, a full driving licence that enables the person to drive in the UK is preferred. SPS is willing to consider proposals put forward by applicants to carry out the duties by any other means.

Applicant must have served a recognised apprenticeship and have obtained a qualification in heating, plumbing and ventilation to a minimum of SVQ Level 3 or equivalent.

On completion of all interviews, a locational merit order list will be created. Appointments will be made in accordance to merit where the current vacancies are. Where there are more successful candidate(s) than posts available, locational reserve merit order lists may be created and retained for 12 months.

Successful candidates will be subject to pre-employment checks, which will include an Enhanced Disclosure Scotland check, References, DVLA licence check (where applicable) and Nationality checks as well as a Medical Assessment.

*Please note Edinburgh receive an additional Geographical RRA (recruitment retention allowance) of £3,000 which has been granted until December 2024 at present and will be further reviewed at this point.


Conduct reactive and planned maintenance and minor works throughout the establishment as instructed to all mechanical plant, equipment and systems.
Maintain a safe and healthy working environment through regular inspection and testing of heating appliances and installations in accordance with relevant legislation. Participating in an "on call" rota for emergency repairs. It is expected that you will be able to attend your home establishment within 60 minutes of being called out. You will also provide area coverage when required.
Monitor and adjust mechanical control systems to ensure optimum performance within guidelines.
To provide technical support and advice on plumbing, heating and ventilation issues to the Technical Manager and other staff as necessary.
Assume practical responsibility for all plumbing, heating and ventilation related installations and provide timely pre-emptive condition reports to Technical Manager.
Assess and order parts and equipment necessary for individual tasks, in conjunction with the administrator.
Person Specification

Qualification Requirements
Have served a recognised apprenticeship and have obtained a qualification in heating, plumbing and ventilation to a minimum of SVQ Level 3 or equivalent. Please ensure CV clearly outlines the above qualifications deemed as essential.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience Requirements

Experience of mechanical services, plumbing and heating services maintenance in an industrial/commercial environment. Please ensure CV provides an example specific to the above criteria.


Have awareness of other basic maintenance and repair tasks (for example, electrical and building works maintenance and repairs), or be willing to develop these skills. Please ensure CV provides a clear example of the above and/or willingness to develop.


Sound knowledge of Health and Safety Legislation, Risk Assessments, Method Statements (Safe Systems of Work), Legionella and control measures etc.


Ability to interpret from drawings, instructions, and specifications.
